i'm feeling self involved today, so don't read behind the cut unless you ever wanted to see a behind the music on me.

i've been thinking about the most influential albums on me of all time. i put them in chronology of when i got them:

Weezer - Weezer, 1994
When I was a kid I went to Maine every weekend because my great grandmother was in the hospital up there. One trip fell on the weekend before my best friend's birthday so convinced my mom to buy The Blue Album while up there. On the extremely boring weekend I couldn't contain myself and I opened the tape and listened to it. I remember hearing "Surf Wax America" and being blown away. Weezer was the first band that really gave me the feeling of "oh man, I wonder if I could rock like that?"

REM - Monster, 1994
This album came out the day before my birthday in 1994 and the same friend who Weezer was bought for bought me this album for my birthday. I remember being amazed with the song writing. Michael Stipe's range was really shown from the falsetto of "I Don't Sleep, I Dream" to the gruff "I Took Your Name". Later I realized at some point in my life I attempted to cover every song on this album.

Bush - Sixteen Stones, 1994
I feel odd NOT putting this album on my list since most of the time when people say "what's your favorite song of the 90s?" my consistant answer has been "Everything Zen" forever. I remember watching MTV and seeing the birds sitting on the telephone wire, hearing that opening riff of "Everything Zen" and seeing the birds scatter. I was always so excited that the video was on again. I'm not going to say this album was great, but I remember being so in love with "Everything Zen", "Comedown", "Glycerine", "Machinehead", and "X-Girlfriend". Bush had such great grunge song writing that I think their songs are some of the only "grunge" songs I can still listen to after my angsty youth and still really get into.

Cake - Fashion Nugget, 1996
I remember the alternative rock station in CT used to do the 8 most request songs of the day at 8pm, it was called "the 8 most wanted". When Cake's "The Distance" came out, it owned that countdown. I heard the song and I thought "why is this guy talking over a rockabilly guitar riff?" Then I listened more and there were horns and there were keyboards. I think I bought the CD for some ridiculous price like 18.99 but to this day I think it was probably worth it. It was a different kind of song writting than I had ever heard and I still think Cake is one of the most unique bands ever.

Big D and the Kids Table - Shot by Lammi, 1997
In 8th grade, bands like Reel Big Fish were making ska all the rage. My best friend at the time made me a tape of this album. I went through entire school days singing "What?" to myself. It made me really love ska and to this day I can't help dancing to Big D. I completely attribute this album for me being in a high school ska band.

Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, 1977
I saw the 100 greatest bands (or albums) on VH1 the summer before my freshman year of high school. After hearing snippets of "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK" I immediately put this album on my birthday list. My uncle bought it for me. It was so cocky and brash yet smart that I was in love. I started pinning Union Jack flags to my clothes and looking up interesting types of government referenced in the album like "commmunism" and "anarchy".

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited, 1965
Before a long trip to Maine I bought this CD. I bought it on the strength of only hearing "Knockin on Heaven's Door" but not being able to find the CD with that on it. I recognized the song title "Like a Rolling Stone" from a music magazine I used to read so I bought the album. I remember my bus taking me to high school used to get me to school early, so I sat with my discman and I would put on "Desolation Row" and sit outside my homeroom and wait to see if I could get through the whole song before the homeroom bell would ring. I can only really remember doing it once.

The Velvet Underground and Nico - The Velvet Underground and Nico, 1967
My friend Adam bought this album once when I was with him on a trip to the mall. On a whim I bought it too the next time I saw it. It wasn't like anything I ever really listened to. Lou Reed's voice and lyrics made me really feel like I was on heroine. Songs like "Sunday Morning" and "Femme Fatale" were such mind trips for me, then songs like "Waiting for My Man" and "Heroine" were just great rock songs.

Piebald - If It Weren't For Venetian Blinds, It Would Be Curtains for Us All, 1999
At the beginning of my senior year of high school, I used to go to this site called "emomusic.com" or something, that listed great emo albums that came out in the 1990s. I used Audiosatellite to download the album. A week after downloading the album I went to Borders and had the album ordered for me. The lyrics were so crisply written, every line was sarcastic or bitter. The music was poppy but still changed time signatures.

Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear, 2001
I bought this my freshman year of college, it was my first real induction into indie pop and immediately sent Beulah to the very top of my favorite bands list. Miles Kurowsky's voice is so pure and his lyrics are so melancholie but covered up beautifully by horn and string arrangements. It made me realize that I didn't have to listen to "emo" music to get the kind of lyrics I wanted.
TOUR PT. 1

this is run down of the tour so far:
day 1: 8 hour drive from CT to Akron, OH to play the Lime Spider. Akron scared the crap out of me. It was like a ghost town. There were two people in the bar when we got there. No one on any of the streets. The show did fill in but no one really seemed to "feel" my music. We did however meet an amazing band called The Rosebuds. They're on the Merge Records (a fucking awesome record label). They gave us the most valuable gift of all...a coupon book for hotels. (one of which i'm typing from right now)

day 2: We went to cleveland to the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. It was quite awesome. We spent about 4 hours there and then it closed. We were a little pissed cause we weren't quite done. but it was still awesome.

day 3: backyard show at michelle's house outside of chicago. We called up this girl the day of her show and she told us to come and play. We did. It was awesome. She deserves major props for letting it happen. Also, deserving major props is Jimmy Bobbins who let us stay at his abode for the night and his mom for buying us pizza.

day 4: pt. 1. We went to warped tour chicago. Sold samplers. gave away propaganda. and most importantly saw My Chemical Romance and the Bouncing Souls. Also, it was good to see familiar faces like Dave from Big D, dudes from the Skeptics, and Astronautilis. Unfortunately, I missed Immortal Technique and Non Phixon for which I can never forgive myself.

pt2 Milwaukee, WI. what a chill place? It was the basement of this place. It was falling apart. Upstairs was a fridge filled with booze. Everyone was drinking (except kev and me). The bands were all pretty great. The people were all pretty great. and kevin and i agreed i played the best set of my life. I fucking rocked out standing up. I moved around. it was like a revolution.

next: have a gig in Indiana tomorrow. then we're going to an Indians game the day after. and then rochester NY. and then the baseball hall of fame. and then home.

now: sleep.

good night all and stay tuned.

adam!

This was a fun show. I got to play with some of my favorite bands like The Teles and Malachi Constant. I went on second and besides a small group of girls, not too many people paid attention. My set list was:
I Hate Being Hopeful in December
Road Rage
The New Sleeping Arrangement
Must See TV
1960's Winter in Paris
Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault (Jawbreaker Cover)
Reflections of My Former Life as a Cheesehead
the New Sleeping Arrangement is a brand new song. It's really good and really poppy. I thought it turned out particularly well. 1960's Winter in Paris is also a brand new song but I didn't like how it turned out too much, I still have some tweeking to do on it. It should be all ready for my coffee shop appearence next week though.

So i had a gig last night. i didn't list it. it was at a birthday party for a state rep from CT. Cool guy, my uncle asked me if i wanted to play, i said sure. it was actually a really fun time. I whipped out some new songs along with the traditionals. even though it was an older crowd than i was used to people enjoyed it. my set was:
If You're Not Part of the Solution, You're Part of the Parcipitate
Road Rage
For Me, The Sun Rises in the East and Sets in the East
This Ain't the Age of Aquarius and I'm not Growing Waterwings
X-Marks the Spot
Writer's Block Pt. 1
Must See TV
Burned Out
Reflections of my Former Life as a Cheesehead

Road Rage is a brand new song. I thought it turned out really well, as did the people that were watching so good times. Also, I thought Writer's Block sounded better than usual. Good times, good times.

Oct. 4th

So the show today was really fun to play. There were not a lot of people there. My schedualed set time was 11:30 am...but i didn't get there until noon, so i played around 1 pm. It wasn't crowded cause it was early so it gave me the opertunity to whip out some new stuff. my set was:
If You're Not Part of the Solution, You're Part of the Parcipitate
This Ain't the Age of Aquarius and I'm Not Growning Waterwings
For Me, the Sun Rises in the East and Sets in the East
Reflections of my Former Life as a Cheesehead
(my first encore ever at the request of the crowd)
Writer's Block Pt. 1
Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault (Jawbreaker Cover)
I Hate Being Hopeful In December

I thought the Jawbreaker cover went very very well. The crowd was a bit heckly requesting Reflection (and calling it Milwaukee), but I suppose it can be expected. This show also premired "For Me..." and I thought that went really well as well as "If You're Not..."
all in all a good productive show. I got another show this Thursday, everyone come and check it out. check the website for details. www.adam-morgan.com.

This show was a backyard show. The kid running it was uber nice, i think his name was Matt. Anyways, i had horrendous luck with the show. One of my guitar strings broke (even though they were brand new strings). then I used Matt's guitar and broke one of his strings. It was quite the perdictament. well, alas there were a couple of up sides to the show. I few songs i felt went very well.
my set was:
If You're Not Part of the Solution, You're Part of the Parcipitate
This Ain't The Age of Aquarius and I'm Not Growing Waterwings
The Moral and Ethical Issues of Thumb Wrestling
The Ill Effects of Your Narcolepsy (my first string broke just before the bridge of this one)
California Connection
Hermaphrodite in a Sequenced Dress
X Marks the Spot
Reflections of my Former Life as a Cheesehead (my string broke sometime during this, it fucked it up, so i kinda had to break it off and start from the first "I hated Milwaukee." it sucked)
I thought particularly "The Moral and Ethical Issues of Thumb Wrestling", "Hermaphrodite in a Sequenced Dress", and "X Marks the Spot". It was nice to debut "If You're Not Part of the Solution, You're Part of the Parcipitate", but due to a shit load of feedback and an overly loud guitar i fucked up the third verse a little. I'll be playing it first at my next show hopefully too. so check my website. the next show is Do Not Cross Fest II. Looks like a hot show, but i'm opening it at like 11:30, so get there early!

all right, as i live like a rock star and have two gigs in one day lemme tell about them.
the first was in chris from missing cary's back yard. i got there 15 minutes into my set and had 15 minutes to play. so i whipped out a fast set with little to no talking in between songs. which is a good thing. the set was:
Must See TV
writer's block
moral and ethical issues of thumbwrestling
new day rising
Reflections

I was a little bit throaty i think but it wasn't too bad. there was a small child during my set running around screaming "free soda". he was cute so i didn't mind.

second gig of the night. at the madison arts barn at their acoustic night. when i played between 1 and 4 people had paid to get in. so i was playing to next to no one. it was ok, the people that were there were nice. my set was:
X-marks the Spot (my pick broke so i didn't play the break down)
My Escape and Eventual Return to the Infirmary
This Ain't The Age of Aquarius and I'm not Growing Waterwings
The Ill Effects of Your Narcolepsy
Donna Lee Bakery Massacre
Writer's Block
California Connection
Reflections

I thought this set i sounded a lot better and once again i did little talking mainly because everyone there was older than me so i was apprehansive to do my traditional banter. but the set was really good, i got to whip out the little heard song "Donna Lee Bakery Massacre" so i was happy.

all right, so i was supposed to play this show. Then i decided i wasn't going to play this show, then people started to show up but not enough people for the first band to want to go on so i came to the rescue and played a little set. It was in this barn in enfield, ct. It was a pretty cool place, at the beginning of my set only 4 people had paid to get in. I think by the end the same amount had paid but more bands showed up and stuff. my set went as so:
Hermaphrodite in Sequence Dress
Writer's Block Pt. 1
The Moral And Ethical Issues of Thumbwrestling
the Ill Effects of Your Narcolepsy
(then the guy who owned the club came over and made me let him play my guitar so he could sing Sublime and some other sucky song. I was wicked pissed at him for disturbing my set.)
Reflections of my Former Life as a Cheesehead

All in all, besides being disturbed I thought my set went very well. I've been enjoying playing Ill Effects lately, which is a switch from like a month ago when i was ready to say the song wasn't ready and i wasn't going to put it on my album. que sera sera.

I had a show last night. i didn't really get booked on it until 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. it was at JC music in meriden, CT. It was a really fun show. the guy didn't promote it at all so there were like 15 people there and the sat on chairs fairly close to me. I got to play an hour and 15 minute set. It was really groovy. my voice started to go a little at the end, i'm not completely over being sick. it still sounded decent and the crowd seemed to enjoy me and applauded for such minor accomplishments as Drop D tuning and saying that i'm crazy. good times. i don't remember my exact set list but i definitely played:
I hate being hopeful in december (soundcheck)
X-marks the spot
the moral and ethical issues of thumbwrestling
the goodbye factor
burned out
streetlight serenade
my escape and eventual return to the infirmary
new day rising
i hate x-mas
irrepressible me
must see TV
writer's block pt. 1
california connection
reflections of my former life as a cheesehead

it was really fun. my in-between song banter was a bit odd, but at least some members of the crowd found it interesting or at least mildly amusing. all in all good show.

July 6th

This was kind of an unannounced gig. Mainly because i learn of it last night. I played at the Flywheel in Easthampton Mass. The night before I went to the Flaming Tsunamis secret show. I sang along with one song and apparently i messed up my voice cause this morning i woke up without the ability to hit most notes. so i played the best set i could at the Flywheel. I had to cut some songs so it was awful odd. But my set went as so:
The Ill Effects of Your Narcolepsy
New Day Rising
I Hate Being Hopeful in December
Must See TV
(i told an amusing story about my 4th of july while playing some basic chords. the crowd seemed to enjoy it and a lot of people came inside in the middle of it.)
California Connection
Reflections (i wasn't planning on playing this, then sixfinger kept yelling for it. so i taught the crowd the chorus and we all sang it. it was fun.)
I honestly think this show was the most people that ever watched me and seemed to enjoy which kind of sucks because i wasn't top notch because of this damn sickness. but i don't have a gig for a while so i have time to recoup.

I played Amherst fireworks display. It was my first out of state gig. so I was kind of excited. It was odd, because it was at this huge open field so not many people payed attention and not many people we're close to me except for my good friends in sixfinger and kevin and becky. it went pretty well though. my amp is in the shop so i played with this awesome magnatone my friend let me borrow. it's such a kick ass amp. it has a really nice sound. anyway, my set list went:
writer's block pt. 1
Irrepressible Me
Must See TV
From Your Mouth
New Day Rising
Reflections of my Former Life As a Cheesehead
It all went fairly well. Sixfinger sang along with Reflections, so that was pretty cool. And those people that i could see didn't seem to hate it.

all right, let me review this show i played. it was kind of fun except for my mucho grande amp trouble. I had to play my last song with no amp or mic so i just ushered people to come close and listen to me. about 5 people actually did. whatever, i was first so i was just happy that some people were there. my set went as follow:
This ain't the age of aquarius and i'm not growing waterwings
Writer's Block, pt. 1
California Connection
From Your Mouth (My god lives underwater cover. It went quite well, besides the great amount of amp trouble that started right in the middle of the song. but it really turned out damn well)
Reflections of my life as a cheesehead
Some of the people from the prizefight said they really liked my stuff. i also heard some good stuff from the crowd too. It was a good show. hopefully i can get my amp trouble worked out for the july 4th show.

the show today was cancelled due to something. i dunno what. i think the cops or something. that's ok. i wasn't really prepared anyway. next week i'm playing gary t. woodruff's ungraduation party. sorry, it's private, but i'll still write up a little review. also playing is my good friends, The Royal Assassins.
gig tonight

all right,
the show tonight was at the newington Starbucks. i honestly didn't make a set list cause i figured it'd just be my friends and i. but there were actually costomers interested in listening to me. A bunch of people stayed for a while, but mostly people were in and out for the most part. I played a couple new songs like "This Ain't The Age of Aquarius and I'm not Growing Waterwings" and "Right Now Scott Bayo is Having Sex With a Woman He Doesn't Even Love". Otherwise i played a pretty standard 2 and a half hour set. David played trombone of 7 songs. also, i did a great rendition of Hootie and the Blowfish "Hold My Hand" and i also did an acoustic version of my old band's song "Donna Lee Bakery Massacre". All and all, besides a couple of really annoying individuals showing up, it was a good gig.

next gig, next saturday in portland, CT. a back yard bbq. sounds like fun.

peace,
adam

update??

all right, i'm gonna use this as a journal of all the shows i play and stuff. sound good? yeah.
all right, may 10th, i got suckered into playing new britain high school's Cafe Tempo. mainly cause i was there to support becky and a bunch of acts dropped out so they asked me to play.
my set went:
Must See TV
This Ain't the Age of Aquarius and I'm not growing Waterwing
Writer's Block Pt. 1
Reflections of my Former Life as a Cheesehead

the second song is a fairly new song i wrote. i thought it went fairly well, although i think it might need something.
the crowd that was inside seemed to enjoy me a fair amount. the crowd outside (all my enemies) were quoted as saying:
joe cuomo: I thought someone good was going on
jacob B: He sounds like a fat billy corgan

bravo to them. if you'd like to contact joe cuomo IM him at HjApNcG . he's the kid with staind constantly as his away message. oh to make things fair, jacob b. played guitar and sang and played a hootie and the blowfish song in the style of creed. so that was awful. all the other bands were unenjoyable as all hell, except for this kid Andy's band. andy was the fucking man at shredding, it got me all hot and bothered. he was nice to, he hung around to tell me i was good. so love for him.

all right, next show May 31 @ starbucks in newington CT, it's on the corner of willard ave and main street. so everyone should come and see. i think i'm playing 7-9 or 7:30 - 9:30 it's one or the other.

hopefully see you there,
adam!
